Did you know? South Asians are four times more likely to have heart disease and are affected by the disease at a much younger age.

While cardiovascular disease tops the list for causes of death in the U.S., one physician makes it his mission this Heart Month (and all year round) to raise awareness of the disease amongst South Asians.

Dr. Shoeb Sitafalwalla, cardiologist and medical director at the South Asian Cardiovascular Center at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Ill., says that diet, nutrition and regular check-ups are a vital way to stave off the disease. He also says that being informed and having accurate information is just another simple way for South Asians to combat the disease.

“There is a myth that traditional fats like ghee, which is clarified butter, or coconut oil are somehow healthy fats and oils for South Asians, when in fact, the science tells us they are not,” he says.
