Bathing a newborn baby with herbs

The first bathing of the baby is as reverent an event as the discharge from the hospital. Each family has certain traditions associated with such a significant procedure.

Pediatrics today is different from the one that was a couple of dozen years ago, but herbs for bathing newborns are used to this day, and there is an explanation for this.

Decoctions of herbs have great benefits for the baby’s body, incomparable with anything, their use eliminates the need to boil water, because herbs have the properties of neutralizing water.

When to start?

Our grandmothers and mothers insist that you need to bathe the child immediately after discharge from the hospital, in fact, this is not entirely correct. You can arrange herbal baths for the baby from the second week of life, but provided that the wound on the navel has already healed. Usually, a baby bath is used for bathing, after six months it will be possible to bathe a child in an adult bath, but the concentration of the broth will change.

It is extremely important to observe the exact proportions of grass and water, because where there is benefit, there can be harm. Increased concentration can threaten the baby’s delicate skin with irritation, do not abuse.

How to brew herbs?

You must clearly understand that a medicinal plant can cause an allergic reaction, so you need to start with one type of grass. As soon as you understand that there is no allergy, you can move on to the next view. If you alternate, then you will not be able to understand in time – what the rashes came from, because the allergy does not always manifest itself immediately.

A so-called skin test will be very useful – apply a decoction to a skin area and observe about half an hour. Any redness, even very slight, or peeling should be a call for you: it is better not to use this herb.

It is worth paying attention to the behavior of the baby – each plant has its own influence. One herb acts as a sedative, while the other, on the contrary, excites. If you notice that after a skin test the child began to behave atypically, then this is most likely a reaction to a specific plant.

Dear parents, you do not need to have a bath from a mixture of plants. The combination can give the most unexpected effect. First, let the skin get used to one-component broths, then you can try to mix the plants, but no more than 4 at a time.

Usually use the following herbal combinations for bathing newborns :

  • chamomile-string-thyme-oats;
  • nettle-string-oregano;
  • currant and birch leaves;
  • nettle-medunica-horsetail-oats / thyme.

The baby’s health does not tolerate experiments, so choose only trusted manufacturers. Many mothers think that it is safer and more beneficial to buy herbs from grandmothers in the market or to collect them yourself, but this is a great misconception.

Each plant has its own collection period. Having collected at the wrong time, you run the risk of getting a useless fee at best, and even harming it at worst. Moreover, you cannot be sure that, for example, a grandmother selling grass collected it away from the highway or a chemical plant. Herbs sold at the pharmacy guarantee safety.

How to prepare a decoction for bathing a newborn :

  1. For one time, the mass of grass should not exceed 30 grams, a larger amount is fraught with allergies.
  2. If you use grass picking, take them at a 1: 1 ratio.
  3. The minimum period from preparing a decoction to bathing should be one and a half hours. You can insist 5 hours, but after wrapping the container with a warm cloth. Enamelled or porcelain, but in no case aluminum, is considered the best utensil for brewing grass. A pot or kettle is fine.
  4. Before the broth gets into the bath, it needs to be filtered, because trapped particles of plants can damage delicate skin.

Often in the pharmacy you can buy ready-made filter bags. Be sure to read and follow the instructions. Add broth to the bath just before bathing and do not forget to check the temperature of the water.

Bathing baby

Pour the broth into the bath for bathing, then dilute with water to the desired amount. It is important that the water is comfortable for the child’s temperature, ideally – 35-36 degrees, a maximum of 37. Start bathing with 5 minutes, then increase daily, bringing to 10-15 minutes. The baby needs to take herbal baths 2-3 times a week, and one week per month is better to take a break.

When bathing your baby, make sure that he does not swallow water. After such a bath, you do not need to rinse the child with plain water and even more so wash off the broth with soap. Keep in mind that the decoction of some plants is dark in color, so it may stain on a towel or diaper.

Herb Selection

Each plant has its own effect. Preference should be given depending on the desired effect. Bathing a newborn in chamomile has a good effect on the skin. Chamomile has an antiseptic as well as a calming effect, and is also great for girls urogenital system.

Bathing in a series of newborns will help to avoid allergies, if there are rashes on the baby’s skin, bathe him in a decoction of the series. Also, the series has an antimicrobial effect. Nettle – a disinfectant, lavender – a sedative effect. Valerian broth strengthens the baby’s cardiovascular system, and can also heal wounds. Suitable for active and easily excitable crumbs.

There is also a list of unwanted and even forbidden herbs :

  • celandine;
  • thuja;
  • sagebrush;
  • broom;
  • tansy.

If a small family member has skin or neurological diseases, you should definitely consult a doctor.

A decoction of plants improves appetite, has a beneficial effect on tone, and is involved in metabolism through the skin. A properly selected plant will become your assistant on the way to the baby’s health.

In herbal baths for a child, you can use plants such as peppermint, oak bark, sage and calendula flowers, plantain leaves, St. John’s wort grass. Remember that the health of your baby is in your hands.
