Vermox
Vermox is an anthelmintic drug with a wide range of effects. Causes irreversible metabolic disorders in the body of helminths, interferes with the synthesis of cell tubulin, inhibits the synthesis of ATP, which contributes to the destruction of parasites. Most effective for enterobiosis and trichocephalosis.
The active substance is mebendazole. Release form – tablets.

Pyrantel
“Pyrantel” is an anthelmintic. It blocks neuromuscular transmission in sensitive helminths, which contributes to paralysis of parasites and their death.
The active substance is pyrantel. Release form – tablets and suspension for internal use.
Indications for use:
- Enterobiosis.
- Ascariasis
- Hookworm.
- Necatorosis
You can not use with individual intolerance to the components that make up the medication.
It is made in Poland, India and Russia. Released by prescription.
Comparison
To understand which drug is better, you need to compare them. Both medicines are used to destroy parasites that affect the human digestive system, kidneys, skin, liver and other organs. Medicines have a detrimental effect on helminths, causing their death.
Tools have various active ingredients. In Vermox, this is mebendazole, and Pirantel contains the same active substance. Because of this, the drugs have different effects – the first causes irreversible metabolic disorders in helminth organisms, and the second blocks neuromuscular transmission and paralyzes the body of worms.
“Vermox” is available only in the form of tablets, and “Pyrantel” in the form of tablets and suspensions – this allows you to assign “Pyrantel” to patients who, for whatever reason, have no way to take medicines in the form of tablets. It is worth noting that Pirantel is approved for use in all age groups of patients (even in infants), and Vermox can be used only from 2 years old.
If we compare the indications of drugs, then the first of them has more. Vermox is effective in many types of helminthic infestations and has a wider range of effects. However, it has much more contraindications than Pirantel, which is contraindicated only in case of intolerance to the components.
The main disadvantage of Pirantel is that it does not affect the larvae of worms. Therefore, after some time, mandatory re-treatment is required to get rid of the remaining parasites and prevent further infestations.
Vermox has many more side effects, and they are more serious and severe. The drug causes disturbances in blood formation, blood diseases, inhibition of renal function, allergic reactions, etc. The second medication can cause only disorders of the central nervous system (headache, confusion, etc.), digestive disorders and, in rare cases, allergies.
The course of treatment with Vermox is longer, from 3 to 14 days, depending on the indications. A longer duration of therapy increases the risk of side effects. The course of treatment of “Pirantel” is a maximum of 3 days.
Both products are sold strictly by prescription.
What to choose
Only an experienced doctor should prescribe the drug , depending on the indications and contraindications. Self-medication can lead to serious complications and side effects. Treatment is prescribed only after passing tests.
With enterobiosis, ascariasis and hookworm, both drugs are suitable. For other types of helminthiases, the choice depends on the type of invasion.
Small children and infants are best treated with “Pirantel” in the form of a suspension. Firstly, they may have difficulty swallowing tablets (especially in infants), and secondly, the suspension is sweeter and tastier.
Vermox is absolutely contraindicated for pregnant women, and they should be prescribed Pirantel. However, it should be prescribed only in case of urgent need and after the benefit / risk ratio. It is also worth noting that the substance of pyrantel does not have a negative effect on the fetus (proven experimentally).
Lactating women can be treated with both means, but for the period of treatment it is recommended to stop feeding the baby with breast milk.
Patients with diabetes mellitus, lactose intolerance, lactase deficiency and glucose-galactose malabsorption can not use Vermox, since it contains lactose and a suspension of Pyrantel, as it contains sugar and various sweeteners.
