Breastfeeding Mom’s Diet

There are allegations that a nursing mother should follow a diet, drink plenty of fluids, and also eat for two. Whether these statements are correct or not, we consider below.

In the first weeks of a newborn’s life, mother really should follow a strict diet: eat biscuit cookies and drink them with weak tea, eat lean soup and mashed potatoes in milk.

But later, after 2-3 weeks, you can and should try to add new products to your diet.

And it is necessary to do this in order to:

  • firstly: when breastfeeding, the baby received more vitamins and minerals;
  • secondly: a lactating mother will not last on one cookie for a long time, she needs to take energy, strength from somewhere.

And for this, she must eat fully. Therefore, little by little it is possible and necessary to introduce new products into your diet, while maintaining a diet. But be sure, after you have eaten something, wait and see the reaction of the newborn baby.

A nursing mother should drink 2-2.5 liters of fluid per day. The liquid can be plain water, dried fruit compote, tea. If a woman drinks a little liquid, then her milk may be astringent, thick, and this will lead to the fact that it will be harder for the child to suck it. But excessive fluid intake can negatively affect a woman’s health status. She will burden her kidneys, and they can cause swelling. Therefore, it will optimally drink 2 liters of fluid per day, so that the milk is good and the mother feels great.

What can I eat

But the complete misconception is the fact when they say that a nursing mother with breastfeeding should eat for two. This is not true. In any case, the child will receive all the necessary vitamins and elements, even if the mother eats in small portions, but often.

What foods should be consumed by a nursing mother so that the baby receives all the necessary vitamins:

  • steamed fish is a source of calcium;
  • yellow fruits and vegetables;
  • whole grain bread;
  • consume 2-2.5 liters of purified water daily.

What can not be eaten

What foods should not be used by a nursing mother:

  • alcohol (except for red wine and then a little – 1 glass);
  • no chemistry (chips, nuts, crackers, popcorn);
  • you can not eat those products for which the nursing mother herself is allergic;
  • Do not eat fried foods, salty, as well as fatty;
  • with sweets, you need to be careful, but it’s better to completely exclude it for a while.

Very often there are cases when a young mother eats a piece of a bar of chocolate or just a red apple, and a newborn baby immediately has an allergic reaction. How to be so that the baby does not have such a problem. To do this, you need to know products that can cause an allergy in a child.

The list of products that can cause an allergic reaction in a baby who is breastfed:

  • citrus fruits: oranges, tangerines;
  • fruits: red apples, strawberries, raspberries, cherries;
  • seafood: crayfish, crabs, red fish;
  • red vegetables: tomatoes, beetroot;
  • chicken eggs;
  • cow’s milk;
  • honey;
  • nuts of any varieties;
  • coffee, cocoa;
  • chocolate.

From the products described above, for the period of breastfeeding (at least up to 6 months) should be discarded. After 6 months, you can enter these products into your diet, but little by little and not all at once: 1 product 1 time per day. Next, you need to look at the reaction of the baby: if there are no manifestations of allergies, then after a couple of days you can add a little portion and so on with all the products.

What to eat so that there are no colic

There are products that, when consumed by the mother, the baby may begin to have colic in the abdomen, gas formation will increase. You need to know about such products and, if possible, not use them, but replace them with something else.

The list of products that can cause increased gas formation in a baby who is breastfed:

  • legumes;
  • fresh cabbage;
  • cucumbers
  • bow;
  • apples
  • pepper;
  • black bread;
  • cow’s milk.

Whole milk can be replaced with dairy products, such as fermented baked milk or kefir. Instead of brown bread, you can buy whole grain bread. Legumes should be discarded altogether, and finding another protein source to replace is very simple – fish and cheese will be an excellent substitute for protein. If you want apples, then it is better to bake them in the oven. The same applies to vegetables: cabbage, carrots, beets. Vegetables can be boiled or also baked in the oven.

How often and eat a lot

How much does a nursing mother need to eat so that extra pounds do not appear and that the baby does not suffer at the same time? According to the rules, a nursing mother should eat exactly as much as she wants. But, you can’t overdo it, but the correct diet and properly selected foods will become assistants in this matter.

According to nutritionists, for a nursing mother to keep her weight normal, one day should eat 600 kcal. These 600-hundred kcal include: banana, a sandwich with butter and cheese, an egg, a glass of kefir, bread.

If we talk about a more proper nutrition for a nursing mother, then it should be as follows: 1 cup of porridge, and a plate of boiled vegetables, 2 slices of cheese, 1 apple, 100 g of boiled fish. Here, ordinary sandwiches were not enough, but calories are at the same level.
