Flu season starts to pick up, report says

Seasonal flu activity is starting to pick up in certain parts of the country, according to recent Centers for Disease Control data.

Illinois and Wisconsin weren’t among those hot spots among the most recent available report. You can check out where flu is most prevalent here.

That’s good news if you haven’t gotten your flu shot yet.

“It’s still a good time to get a flu shot,” says Dr. Adam Treitman, section chief division of infectious diseases at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill.

“While the flu season will continue to advance, it’s difficult to predict how severe it will be here in Illinois and Wisconsin,” Dr. Treitman says. A low level of activity is beginning to be noted in our community, so getting a flu shot now can get you some protection before activity is more widespread.”

Once flu is here in earnest, you shouldn’t ignore flu-like symptoms like cough and sore throat. The virus can be serious and should be treated that way.

“The earlier you call your doctor, the better,” Dr. Treitman says.
