Gynaecological Cancer

All of the specialists at Greenslopes Obstetrics & Gynaecology are trained and skilled in, where appropriate, screening for gynaecological cancers.  If one is suspected or diagnosed, we have a female gynaecological oncologist who is a sub-specialist with experience in the treatment of gynaecological cancers.

The most common gynaecological cancer is endometrial cancer (cancer of the womb).  Other gynaecological cancers include ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, vulval cancer and vaginal cancer.

The symptoms of these malignant conditions may often be very similar to symptoms associated with benign gynaecological conditions.  A consultation with one of our specialists is useful to determine whether a benign or malignant gynaecological condition is present.

If a gynaecological cancer is suspected, you will be seen urgently by our gynaecological oncologist, who will then offer you the most appropriate treatment options.

Treatment for gynaecological cancers often involves surgery, but associated treatment with chemotherapy or radiotherapy may also be required.  Many gynaecological cancers are often curable, especially if diagnosed at an early stage.

For women aged 18-70, a pap smear is recommended every 2 years which tests for common types of gynaecological cancers.
