Trental or Pentoxifylline, drug choice

Doctors, in the choice between these drugs, are guided by the severity of the course of the disease, its duration, concomitant diseases and the need for the onset of a quick effect, therefore, they mainly prescribe Trental in ampoules intravenously, because it meets these requirements.

Patients are initially attracted by the low price of Pentoxifylline, and when a side effect occurs, due to the need for long-term treatment, they switch to Trental. Therefore, when choosing between these medicines, everyone will be guided by their preferences – action or price.

But it’s still better to consult a doctor, since undesirable effects from taking medications can be corrected, for example, with stomach pain, omeprazole could be used, before using Pentoxifylline to protect the stomach from irritating effects, with nausea – Cerucal to avoid decrease bowel tone. All undesirable effects can be eliminated by other means and it is the specialist who will help to figure this out.

Similarity of drugs

The main therapeutic substance in Trental and Pentoxifylline is one – pentoxifylline. Available in the same forms. Both drugs have identical properties in the treatment of vascular changes, normalize the state of the blood, are used in the treatment of diabetic changes in blood vessels, both are preventive measures for strokes and heart attacks, prevent the formation of blood clots, are prescribed for the treatment of joints.

These drugs are excreted by the kidneys, therefore, with existing renal failure or other serious kidney diseases, dosage adjustment or complete drug withdrawal is necessary. Both one and the other have many contraindications and side effects.

Differences

Trental and Pentoxifylline differ in their manufacturers (India and Russia) and price. This difference is not accidental, since foreign drugs are more expensive than domestic and less toxic. There is a difference in the absorption of drugs, their excretion from the body and, accordingly, in the speed of action. Trental – is almost twice as fast absorbed and excreted, the therapeutic effect from its administration occurs faster than from Pentoxifylline.

But the price of Trental is 10 times higher than that of the second medication. The undesirable effects of Pentoxifylline are faster and more pronounced than in Trental, since people taking it complain much faster about stomach pains, nausea, impaired and loss of appetite, then other symptoms appear, so long-term use of it becomes impossible. But the price is good.
