Peter Marshall, MD, joined the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine (PCCSM) as the inaugural Vice-Chief of Critical Care on June 1, 2019. He will work closely with Zea Borok, MD, Chief of the Division of PCCSM, to standardize and improve the quality of medical critical care at the Keck Medical Center.
“I plan to spend my first few months here learning who the people are and getting to know the system,” Dr. Marshall said. “I want to see where the changes to critical care need to be made.”
Dr. Marshall joins us from the Yale School of Medicine, where he served as the Senior Associate Medical Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Yale-New Haven Hospital. While an Associate Professor at Yale, he worked to improve critical care. Concurrently, he strived to educate house staff, clinical fellows and junior faculty.
Dr. Marshall looks forward to working with DOM trainees in the ICU. “I think mentorship comes in different forms. A lot of it happens at the bed side. While I’m taking care of patients, fellows are right beside me. They’re watching and modeling me, and I’m giving them feedback in real time. It’s important to pick up the clues when a fellow is asking for direction to foster personal and professional development.”
In the future, he hopes to incorporate clinical trials and new research opportunities into the ICUs, to offer cutting-edge treatments to patients.
“We recruited Dr. Marshall because of his strong track record in leading efforts to systematize delivery of critical care at Yale,” said Dr. Borok. “We look forward to working with him to standardize care across all of our ICUs, establish metrics and educate fellows around best practices in critical care.”
