Our experience has shown that if you use the enneagram as an isolated typology, then people do not begin to develop, and even more identify with their type of personality.
In integral psychology, Ken Wilber (2000) says that typologies, such as Myers-Briggs, the Enneagram and the Jungian typology, are horizontal systems. Despite the fact that they are useful for raising awareness, these models do not describe the full picture of human development. However, combining a horizontal model, such as the enneagram, with a vertical system of stages and waves of development of human consciousness, such as spiral dynamics, “we begin to see how a truly multilevel psychology can look” (Wilber, p. 54).

If we are striving for a truly evolutionary change in personality and humanity, we are convinced that these systems can help us understand and define the personality and the different levels of human consciousness. There are a number of systems that describe these two aspects of human beings. The personal enneagram is a dynamic and powerful typology that helps people understand their unique and specific personality structure; she is magnificent in describing the psychological defense mechanisms that each of us uses (Palmer, 1998). As we increase our awareness through self-observation, understanding our patterns and habits, we gain the ability to make conscious choices.
Spiral dynamics is a system that suggests that we look at the evolution of human consciousness over the past 100,000 years (Graves, 2005). This is a wonderful tool, It helps humanity to make shifts in cultures. As we become aware of the range of human values and pictures of the world, we are able to better understand the key problems that cause people, groups, cultures to either conflict or harmoniously interact with each other. In combination, each of these systems teaches others, allowing people to gain a multilateral understanding of their inner world throughout their lives and a more complete view of the constantly evolving levels of consciousness acting inside and out (Ooten, Unpublished).
The first phase of the study was completed in 2005 at the conference of the International Enneagram Association in California with the participation of 38 people who knew their type well in the enneagram and who are well-known teachers of this approach. Each of the groups was asked to “name one word that would indicate their type of enneagram at each of the levels of consciousness” (Table 2) and “bring one phrase that describes their type on each of the levels of consciousness” (Table 1). Among the outstanding teachers and researchers of the enneagram, a consensus was reached on 63 archetypal names and descriptions of each of the types of enneagrams at each level of development.
The second phase of the study continues for five years. Deborah Ooten, PhD, conducted a value test among 230 people who were already familiar with their enneagram types by training with Dr. Ooten or other recognized enneagram teachers and who also received spiral dynamics from Dr. Ooten in the School of Cognized Life (school accredited by the International Enneagram Association) or other programs.
«The value test: priorities in vital elections, analysis of seven memes, pictures of the world and systems of beliefs of people, organizations and cultures “(Beck, 2002) is a scientific and verified analysis of the acceptance or rejection by man of pictures of the world or the values of the seven levels of development of consciousness that are in humans, regardless of whether these levels act in a person consciously (acceptance) or unconsciously (negation). At present, 74 men (32%) and 156 women (68%) from 21 to 65 years have participated in the study. The median age was 47 years. Levels of consciousness develop consistently, each level includes the previous one.
Despite the fact that not all participants reached the highest levels, all levels were presented in the study. 21 participants developed to the blue level, 52 participants – to the orange level, 73 – to green, 65 to yellow and 19 to turquoise. Participants were given 63 archetypal names and descriptions of the types of enneagrams on each of the levels of consciousness and asked for feedback on how well the names and descriptions corresponded to their type at each level of consciousness. Taking into account the most frequent responses, the descriptions of 2005 were expanded.
This research continues with the participation of the students of the School of Awareness of Life and will be more deeply represented in the forthcoming book by Deborah Ooten (Ooten, Unpublished).
This article introduces you to the levels of consciousness on the enneagram through these 63 archetypal names and descriptions.
This view of the personality types in the enneagram within each level of consciousness illustrates a huge number of characteristics of types in the enneagram that differ from wings, movements along lines and subtypes, and also introduces a new dimension to work on conscious evolution.
Spiral dynamics was developed in 1970 by Dr. Clare Graves, and also further refined since then by doctors Don Bek, Chris Cowan, Natasha Todorovich and others. This system describes a biopsychosocial double helix, an evolving model of human consciousness, which opens up a new approach to understanding the forces that influence the interaction and behavior of people during the stage of human development (Graves, 2002; Graves, 2005; Beck, 2006). These stages can be applied to people, organizations, as well as at the geopolitical and national-state level (Beck, 2006). Expression of the level of consciousness is the result of interaction between external conditions of existence and internal complex adaptive systems.
At the moment, we found nine levels or waves of human consciousness, which in turn manifest the “I” (expressive) and “We” (sacrificial) levels, forming two orders of magnitude, or tiers ( tiers ). On the first order-tier there is a conflict inside the level and between the levels. Levels of the second order support alternative, highly adaptive ways of solving problems. Each new emerging level goes beyond the previous one and also includes the values, methods, and prospects of previous levels (Graves, 2002).
Levels of consciousness
Spiral dynamics is an open system: this means that levels continue to emerge as human beings evolve. To date, eight levels have been identified, studied and documented (Graves, 2002, Graves, 2005, Beck, 2006). The ninth level only now arises, but still not enough people have advanced to this level, so you can accurately describe it. The image of the spiral is used because each new level includes the values, skills and mechanisms of the lower levels, becoming more adaptive, complex and extensive (Beck, 2006). As we go through all these stages, all previous levels of consciousness continue to operate in us and can be expressed adequately or inadequately given the time, place, problems and life circumstances that we encounter (Beck, 2006).
While Claire Graves appropriated letters to levels during his double-blind study, levels are increasingly labeled with colors, as was done for simplicity by Beck and Cowan, and in this article we will follow the scheme for designating levels with colors (2006). These levels are applied to different types of human development, including the time range of human evolution, the stages of a person’s growing from infancy to maturity, the evolution of society and the stage of corporate culture (Wilber, 2000).
The first level is the beige level of existence. Beige level of consciousness is associated with instincts of survival of individuals and immediate satisfaction of basic needs for food, water, safety and sex. At this level, the senses are ruled and there is no concept of the individual “I”, there are no notions of time that would go beyond the immediate needs, there are no concepts of space outside of the place occupied. People at this level (they are getting smaller) can be found in remote areas where they live in small dispersed groups without a specific leader.
This level also manifests itself as a basic level of functioning of newborns, patients in the late stages of Alzheimer’s disease and after severe injuries and shock (Graves, 2002; Graves, 2005; Beck, 2006). Today, survival is fully embedded in the genetic code and social activities of most people. Survival is rarely a problem, and if it is, it is only for a short time. However, if survival again becomes a problem, then this level comes to the fore, for example, during such extreme events as the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 or Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

While people gain access to additional energy, there is an observation of cause-effect relationships, and when competition and dangers threaten satisfactory survival, the beige level is replaced by the following. At this point, new neuronal connections create awareness of the difference between an individual and a group, and the understanding that without a group effort it is impossible to guarantee a continued existence (Beck, 2006).
The purple level is magical and animalistic, the key motivations of which are the coaxing of spirits, ensuring the safety of the tribe and guaranteeing the constant satisfaction of basic needs. The key beliefs at this stage are that the world is mysterious and full of dangers; in order to survive, the tribe must keep together, should appease or propitiate idols, spirits, deities and bearers of power. The needs of the individual are subordinate to the group. In the animalistic picture of the world, everything matters and is alive, including stones, trees and earth (Graves, 2005; Beck, 2006). This level is strongly motivated by ensuring security and survival, which is achieved through traditionalism and following the rules of the tribe (Graves, 1974). If and when rituals,
The red level of consciousness is impulsive and self-centered. The key motivation is the desire to do what you want, and the desire to be who you are, regardless of the consequences (Ooten, Unpublished). Neurotransmitters associated with a sense of guilt are physiologically absent in humans at this level, so guilt is not expressed (Graves, 2005). The world is seen as coarse and harsh; perception of the world is in the struggle for survival. At this level of consciousness, the needs of the individual outweigh the needs of the group. People express themselves in an egocentric, impulsive, exploitative manner, they tend to control everything.
At this level, there are two types of people: a victim and a criminal, or a minority of “having” and most “have-nots” (Beck, 2006). Hedonism, immediate satisfaction of desires, manifestation of power, spontaneous actions without feelings of guilt – this is what drives a person. People at this level are more motivated by fear of survival, and use all means of exploitation to gain power (Graves, 1974). When people start to think about their mortality and when impulsive life turns into a serious loss, some go to the next wave of development (Graves, 1974).
From the chaotic and usually short-lived lifestyle on the red level, a blue level of consciousness arises, when people begin to think that the world is divine, controlled and filled with meaning. Here we see obedience to authorities, and for the first time in the coil of human development comes a sense of guilt, creating at this level a desire to do everything right, do good and sacrifice now to receive reward after death (Ooten, Unpublished).
At this level of consciousness, people are more likely to seek meaning in the grounds and can devote themselves to crusades or jihad. Dominance of fundamentalism (Graves, 2002; Beck, 2006). “At this level, a person takes his position in the world. Inequality is a fact of life. He believes that the task in life is the pursuit of perfection in his assigned role – to absolute perfection, regardless of how high or low his point of departure is “(Graves, 2005, p. 254). People who function at this level seek safety through salvation for the sacrifices made. When they tire of sacrificing for the sake of the future, then an orange level arises, where the desire to receive an immediate reward dominates (Graves, 1974).
The ego becomes completely individualized on the orange level, the worldview prevails, in which independence, logic, competition, success, optimism and progress are highly valued (Ooten, Unpublished). The thinking of the orange level rationalizes the means to achieve the goal. Scientific methods are highly valued, but learning is still done through self-testing and observation of what worked for the chosen number of other people. Authorities, however, are not very recognized. At this level, people are able to see many ways to solve the problem; At the same time they believe that there is one best way.
They are highly motivated and often practical, subtle or strategically manipulating others to achieve their own goals (Graves, 2002). Paradoxically, people on the orange level seem highly objective to themselves, while their ego at this stage is very subjective (Ooten, Unpublished). This level of consciousness is key to raising living standards through technological progress for the whole world, but it also has the responsibility for the depletion of natural resources (Graves, 2005; Beck, 2006). At the orange level, people are motivated by independence and use science to achieve materialism (Graves, 1974).
Realizing the intense pain that comes from individuation of ego, independence and competition at the orange level of thinking, a person can realize that he or she has separated from other people (Ooten, Unpublished). The need to link and unite in communities with others develops when moving to the green level of consciousness, where a trustworthy group, inner peace and unity are valued above materialism.
Thinking at the green level becomes wider and open to a greater set of decisions than at previous levels. People at this level pay attention to other people and on equality in rights, opportunities and resources (Graves, 2005). But, paradoxically, this level is associated with the loss of self-interest and the use of a large amount of resources with a negligible result. Adoption and harmony among a valuable group are key to the person at this level. Feelings and spirituality become more important than rational thinking and materialism (Graves, 2005). This level of consciousness is highly idealistic and based on the belief that all people are equal, and, consequently, equal opportunities will allow all people to blossom.
There is a contradiction between the freedom of self-expression and obedience to the group that a person values. Consensus prevails, whereas change and action occur slowly because of the desire to maintain harmony within the group, to consider all the options and to support the status quo. This level also naively believes that all people are loving, good and can learn to appreciate each other (Graves, 2005; Beck, 2006). People are motivated by association and socio-centering to achieve a sense of community (Graves, 1974).
The transition from the first order, or tier, of consciousness to the second-order yellow level is a “majestic leap”, according to Clerus Graves (1974, 2005), when a person realizes that an equal distribution of resources among all people and the expectation that all people will be in equally good and loving, creates more problems than decides. This jump can occur when the conditions of life develop in such a way that they seriously threaten survival, and a person must learn how to survive again (Graves, 2002). Now in the world there are a small number of people who function in the second order of existence, but the species as a whole has not yet reached this level (Ooten, 2010).
Following the selected group at the green level is transformed into acceptance of all people as they are and where they are, in the second order. This acceptance allows people at the yellow level of consciousness to speak, listening to others, regardless of their level. Chaos is seen as part of the natural order and imperative for change (Graves, 2005). People are very flexible in their thinking and can look at things from a point of view superior to all levels of the first order combined (Graves, 2005).
It emphasizes the reality of existence, which is interconnected with spirituality. A person goes beyond a focused self, who has instinctive and emotional impulses, and becomes one who is able to express himself for the benefit of himself and others (Ooten, Unpublished). People at this level live from an understanding of the interconnection of all mankind and that, that what affects one person affects the whole. The focus of attention is the continuation of the existence of all forms of life (and not only of mankind) using the means that correspond to the place and time (Beck, 2006).
Methods and thinking are flexible, capable of adapting to conditions. If democracy is needed, democracy is used. If consensus is needed, consensus is used. The technology is highly adapted for the individual and the whole of humanity to quickly connect and interact at all levels of development, and quickly find ways and resources to solve problems. People at this level can also express some degree of arrogance about their wider views and understanding (Graves, 2005; Beck, 2006).
The turquoise level occurs when the yellow-level interconnection technology creates chaos and new global problems. At the turquoise level, order is understood in the context of the chaos of the universe, and spirituality and physics are combined to gain a deeper understanding of how the universe and the multiverse function (Graves, 2005). The idea of holons gets embodied (the microcosm reflects the macrocosm, and the macrocosm reflects the microcosm, or what is below, like the one above, but that which is above, like the one below). A person is seen as part of a larger cosmos, a collective consciousness that serves the whole and for the part at the same time, because they are inseparable (Ooten, Unpublished).
In understanding this Unity, people at the turquoise level realize that any action and inaction affects all beings, all planetary objects, the entire cosmos (Graves, 2005; Graves, 2002; Beck, 2006). People at this level see the earth and all living beings who inhabit the earth as one organism and understand that sacrifices are necessary for the continuation of life. These people learn intuitively and experimentally, they have settled deeply in the metaphysical and live minimally to create more for everyone (Graves, 2005).
With such a wide consciousness, they can experience difficulties with direct and focused action. The paradox is accepted and is considered essential (Graves, 2005; Beck, 2006). People who function at the turquoise level appreciate the experience and through experimentation they achieve unity with everything that is (Graves, 1974). Archetypes of the enneagram inside the levels of consciousness
Spiral dynamics is a model that describes phylogeny, evolution of individuals. The person’s enneagram is a tool that describes the fixed aspects of the personality and describes ontogeny, the development of a particular individual. The combination of the two systems creates a map of the evolution of people through the lenses of consciousness. By properly understanding and applying these two systems, we can develop a deep empathy and understanding of our fellow human beings and can become more effective in what we do (Ooten, Unpublished).
Purple level of consciousness
Type one: Judge / Magistrate. The first type on the violet level of consciousness functions as a magistrate. The judge at an early stage of evolution is busy maintaining the rules of the group and instructing the participants. The main focus of attention of the Magistrate is to ensure the inviolability of the group structure, which ensures universal security. The judge at this level of consciousness is the guardian of the rituals of the tribe and ensures the transfer of rituals to the younger generation through an oral tradition (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type two: Assistant / Sufferer. At this level of consciousness, type 2, the Helper, functions like a Sufferer who works tirelessly to ensure that our home / our land is a safe place for all. The sufferer will sacrifice himself on many levels in order to ensure the safety of the group and the continuation of the genus (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type three: Doer / Wizard. On the violet level, type 3, the Doer, functions as a Wizard and Magician, ready to defend the group by magic, if required. The magician tirelessly interacts with spirits in order to maintain a bridge between the harsh reality and the magic of the natural world, the universe (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type four: The Idealist / Keeper of Secrets. Type 4, the Idealist, at this level becomes the Guardian of Secrets and communicates with magical nature in order to ensure the safety of the group. The Guardian of Secrets keeps oral or narrative traditions, the secrets of healing and the secrets of nature. The Custodian of Secrets communicates with the mysterious aspects of nature and receives from there information that is necessary for the safety of the group (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type five: Sage / ascetic. On the violet level, type 5, the Sage, becomes an ascetic and functions as a shaman, the guardian of wisdom, which is in the mysteries of nature. The ascetic is the prophet of the group, connected to the universal wisdom (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type Six: Asking Questions / Vizier. On the violet level of consciousness, type 6, Asking Questions, assumes the role of Vizier, becomes an advisor to the authoritative people of the group. The vizier is holy, following the magical beliefs in order to ensure that the group is safe, dressed, shod and nourished. The Vizier uses intuitive abilities to anticipate and prevent dangers that the group may encounter, advising superiors how to maintain power (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type seven: Adventurer / Elf or Jester. Type 7, Adventurer, functions like an Elf or a Jester on a purple level. His role is to raise the spirit of the group and make it feel that it is the best that chauvinistic sentiments prevail in it. He brings laughter and spontaneity to rally the members of the group and soften the harsh reality of life. The light nature of type 7 ensures the penetration of humor and fun into everyday life, brings the ability to laugh at oneself (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type eight: Defender / Clergyman. At this level, type 8, the Defender, functions as a Clergyman, communicating directly with the deities in order to protect, control and represent the group. The priest uses himself as a defender, protecting the group from the forces of nature (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type nine: Moderator / Dreamer. On the violet level, type 9, the Moderator, functions as a Dreamer. He lives in a world of dreams, being in a trance that connects the magical world and “reality”. The dreamer supports the rituals of the group and the traditions of everyday life, connecting the physical and spiritual worlds (Ooten, Unpublished).
Red level of consciousness
Type one: Judge / Avenger. Type 1, the Judge, at this stage of evolution functions as the Avenger, sees the world in black and white colors as right and wrong, fair and unfair – and this assessment depends on internal values. At this level, the Avenger manages to maintain the exploit position, which is maintained by the belief that those who criticize me, doubt my rightness or call into question my authority or authority, deserve to die (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type two: Helper / Prostate Prostitute. Type 2, Assistant, at this level functions as a Prostitute, controls through indispensability and obtains power through a position of strength or through communication with political tycoons, heads of criminal clans or gods. A professional prostitute is not about sex, but about proposing oneself in order to gain a position of strength. At this level of consciousness, power is achieved through mediation between political tycoons, heads of criminal clans and gods. Men (Professional Prostitutes) are usually the second person after the most influential leader (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type three: Doer / Warrior. At this level, type 3, the Deliverer, manifests itself as a Warrior, ready to fight for what he thinks will make him successful and give recognition. He does not exchange freedom to meet someone’s expectations. At this level, type 3 is usually an aggressor, not a victim – it is very important that he is considered the leader, the one who controls. The doer at this level usually goes over the heads to get the highest reward or position. His credo is success at all costs, because he has no conscience that holds him back. Power brings applause (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type four: Idealist / Hysterical. Type 4, the Idealist, functions like a Hysterical: either revolts, or in despair. He is more often a victim, not a criminal, because he moves his emotions and watches what happens to him, and does not take responsibility for his life. Hysterics allows himself to express emotions spontaneously, is on the verge of a genius and a madman. The hysterical either gets leadership through passion, or finds followers through suffering (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type five: Sage / Wizard. For type 5, Sage, Sorcerer at this level, it’s good to be close to the king, but not the king. This allows you to have power at a safe distance. At this level, the Witch Doctor with one foot stands on the previous level – he introduces elements of magic, which makes him a skilful genius. As a healer, he supports the position of intellectual power and a safe distance from the aggressors. Depending on his intellectual skills, he can take the position of either a criminal or a victim (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type six: Asking Questions / Pander. Type 6, Asking Questions, functions as a Purser on the red level. The Predictor has the ability to be either a phobic victim or a counter-phobic criminal. Paranoia in full: “I – them, before they – me!” And “You are better than me!”. Phobic Pander uses intellectual abilities to be closer to those in power and feel safe. Counter-phobic Pander becomes criminals, intellectually defending their hedonistic desires (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type Seven: Adventure Finder / Addict. At this level, type 7, the Adventurer, functions as an Addict. The addict lives today, satisfying his sensual and sexual needs, because “tomorrow may not come.” For the Addict, the main thing is getting maximum pleasure at the moment. An addict can relieve pain by any means. Type 7 at this level gets power through “fogging” (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type Eight: Defender / Amazon / War Dictator. At this level of adult psychosocial behavior, type 8, the Protector, is a criminal, overly controlling and dominating the position of totality and fear, like the Military Dictator or the Amazon. Red type 8 retains power and provides protection to those who completely obey his will. Eight defends, but for a fee. Since there is no sense of guilt at this level of consciousness, nothing stops him in his insatiable thirst for power and control (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type nine: Moderator / Internal Explosion. At this stage of development, Type 9, the Moderator, is an Inner Blow and more aware of its own needs, rather than the needs of other people than at other levels of first-order development. He moves the concentrated inside and ready to explode with anger, which gives him the opportunity to indulge his narcissistic desires. At this stage of development, he has less desire to avoid conflicts, but there is a desire for power over others, which is not extinguished by a sense of guilt. The expression of anger often leads to isolation (Ooten, Unpublished).
Blue level of consciousness
Type one: Judge / Crusader. At this level, type 1, the Judge, manifests itself as a Crusader, acting “for a just cause”, who condemns himself and others, adhering to an inflexible position and following the laws and rules of authority recognized by him. The crusader believes that there is only one “right way” to put in order the chaos that was on the Red level, by subordinating the personality to the group (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type two: Assistant / Servant. At this level of consciousness, type 2, the Helper, puts himself in the position of Servant for an authoritative person, organization or for a good purpose, devoting himself to service and sacrificing for the sake of others. At this level, type 2 uses a sense of guilt as a motivating factor for themselves and for manipulating other people in order to ensure that they follow authoritative group people and rules for receiving rewards in the future (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type three: Doer / King / Queen. Type 3, the Doer, assumes the role of Leader or King / Queen of a group, organization or family, as an authority, which all must obey at this level of consciousness. The trio establishes ideals and values that will help maximize the potential of each and bring success to the group. The trio believes that strict adherence to the rules of the game will help to get a return in the future. Relentless work, dedication and perseverance are expected and are a sufficient reward today. A sense of guilt can come to the surface if Troika allows himself or others to relax (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type four: Idealist / Living Sacrifice. The Four, the Idealist, is concerned at this level with an internal code of conduct, which leads to inner suffering. The Four functions as a Living Sacrifice for the benefit of all. He (a) can become a monk, living in isolation, to investigate his guilt in what was (a) primarily concerned with himself, and not with others. This propensity can create, condemn or destroy, depending on the focus of attention of a particular person of type 4 (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type five: Sage / Gnostic. Type 5, the Sage, functions as the Gnostic, being the holder of knowledge. There is some safety in that he knows that he “knows”. This knowledge is used to ensure that the group is consistent with values, the pursuit of which will ensure a good reputation in the eyes of those who are considered a divine force (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type Six: Asking Questions / Mandatory. Type 6 Asking Questions becomes Mandatory at the blue level, because a sense of duty forces righteous people to fight for the good of all. Type 6 understands that victims are needed in order to ensure the safety of the group. The Six sacrifices itself and becomes part of the group that believes that this is the only way to salvation. Doubts and questions are allowed to disappear from the consciousness of the true believer – and this allows him to have an “external authority”, sacrificing “inner authority” (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type Seven: Adventurer / Fiction. Type 7, Adventurer, becomes a Fiction at the blue level. The inventor wants to do everything that is necessary, according to what he has invented in his head in order to bow to the “beliefs” of the one who is the authority. Since “reality” is subjective, it can live with the limitations of the present, creating and inventing an alternative fictional reality in order to avoid the limitations that sacrifice requires. Motives and goals are important, but the truth is relative (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type eight: Defender / Leader. Type 8, Defender, functions at the blue level as Execute. Someone must lead the crusades or jihad, and the eight is able to protect and embody the values and beliefs of the group, providing the security that the group believes will save it. Type 8 at this level is ready to die for the group and for a just cause, believing that it will bring salvation, absolute power (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type nine: Moderator / Obedient. For type 9, the Moderator, achieving unceasing peace of mind is easy if one follows the “one right path”, being obedient. Harmony is guaranteed if one takes his place in this world and maintains comfort and stability through maintaining relations. There is no need to feel guilty if inequality is a given, and disharmony happens, unless one accepts the truth. Type 9 at this level finds safety, if does not rock the boat, obedience does not cause problems, if everything is prescribed and there is no choice, in fact (Ooten, Unpublished).
Orange level of consciousness
Type one: Judge / Auditor. At the orange level, type 1, the Judge, wants to achieve self-perfection. Type 1 believes that his way is the right way; he applies high integrity standards and attention to detail in order to achieve success in self-improvement. Units at this level are preoccupied with rules, procedures, the distribution of things and those who are right and who is to blame. The auditor checks himself more than anybody else (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type two: Assistant / Executive Assistant. Irreplaceable in organizations – whether business, family or community organization – is the key to success for type 2, the Executive Assistant at the orange level. Type 2 at this level often appears as a “gray cardinal”, helping those in power to gain power and material prosperity for themselves. The Executive Assistant often places himself in the position of a “controller” of access to the first person, keeping track of who is accessing whom and to whom. The assistant wants recognition, gratitude and reward for what he does (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type three: The Deliverer / General Manager. Type 3, the Deliverer, acquires and maintains an impeccable level of competence and effectiveness to reach the top. For the Director General at the orange level, the achievement is much more important than anything else. The chameleon talents of the triples are used to create a “waterproof” image of oneself, which should inspire trust and respect among those with whom the trio communicates. At the orange level, the Director-General wants others to think that he knows what he is doing, and leads the others to where they want to go. The sky is a limitation, the top of the mountain is something that must be achieved without fail, failure is not considered an option. Any person and any event is an opportunity to achieve success (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type four: Idealist / Manipulator. Envy leads type 4, the Idealist, to competition and to focusing on material things, and at the orange level it functions as a Manipulator. Individualism emphasizes the uniqueness and elitism of type 4, which manipulates the system to get what it “deserves”. “I have the right” – through such rationalization, he allows himself everything to satisfy the demands of envy and desire. The image is created by “appearance for success”, thinking over the “image”. The presentation of oneself and the environment is strongly emphasized to enhance the sense of material luxury and well-being (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type five: Sage / Explorer. Type 5, the Sage, works at the orange level as an Explorer, saving energy in order to direct it to find rational answers and get the best results. Increasing the intellectual level, analysis and thinking lead to the search for knowledge for scientific and personal gain. Deep level, its own niche and research – this is necessary for material prosperity or benefit for themselves. Rationality is considered the best philosophical and scientific approach in life. Type 5 on the orange level tries to deprive oneself of those feelings that can not be measured and qualitatively evaluated, and lives in a state of super-rationality (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type six: Asking Questions / Madman. Independent thinking at the orange level reduces the ability to trust outside authorities, and the type 6 Asking Questions must look inward in seeking authority. But nevertheless, type 6 continues to doubt that inside you can find credibility. Doubts in the internal authority, together with the need to have external scientific confirmation lead Type 6 to frenzy, he becomes a Madman. There is no faith in external authorities. There is also a strong desire for material stability, which can only be achieved through our own efforts. This motivation can lead to courageous action if you take the risk, fighting fear and questions (Ooten, Unpublished, Ooten, 2010).
Type Seven: Adventure Finder / Innovator. At this level, type 7, the Adventurer, sees a world full of opportunities. As an innovator, he has a lot of resources, he uses and connects opportunities, fascinates others to get benefits for himself. Type 7 has a dichotomy of the inferiority / complex complex of Napoleon, and in order to avoid a morbid sense of inferiority, he “level the playing field”, holding a certain authority in his mind. This leads to an indirect challenge to authorities, which is used to advance the career ladder (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type eight: Defender / Boss. Type 8, the Defender, manifests as the Boss on the orange level, is motivated by material things and at any cost avoids the fear of being controlled. At this level, the Boss wants to retain power, impose his own truth in assessing situations and others. Power and passion are sent to create an empire. The boss can follow only a very strong leader, and if this is not – then consciously or subconsciously quickly take this role on himself. Type 8 at the orange level believes that being an “island” is a reliable protection against vulnerability (Ooten, Unpublished, Ooten, 2010).
Type nine: Moderator / Serial. Type 9, the Moderator, will move with others to achieve their own desires, – it is advantageous for the group to follow if it goes in the same direction. The consecutive person lives slowly, at a constant pace, consistently approaches to achieving material prosperity and progress. Passive aggressiveness in behavior helps to maintain autonomy in order to achieve their goals when they are different from the goals of the group, partner, family or work collective (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Green level of consciousness
Type one: Judge / Objective. Type 1, the Judge, functions as an “objector” on the green level and objects to the “normal way” of existence, because he believes that there is a more perfect “right path”. Units become a generator of chaos – they shake things on a green level. The objector tries to defend a point of view that reflects his values, such as diversity, justice and the preservation of the environment. Conflict in the group must be avoided in order to maintain group harmony, and anger of type 1 is directed at those who do not conform to the principles and mentality of the group (Ooten, Unpublished, Ooten, 2010).
Type two: Aid / Mother (Father) of the Earth. Type 2, the Helper, expresses the “need to be needed” at the green level as sympathy and sacrifice to take care of the needs of all, functioning as the Mother (Father) of the Earth. Type 2 believes that everyone needs care and sympathy, and this is his version of empathy. Mother (Father) of the Earth believes that he has a big enough heart to give the love that the world needs. Such victims exhaust and reduce the contribution that the Helper can bring to the world (Ooten, Unpublished, Ooten, 2010).
Type three: Doer / Politician. The study of one’s feelings becomes acceptable at the green level, and for type 3, “doing” begins to be associated with care. As type 3, the Deliver directs the focus of attention in his work Politics to serving the “common good”. Energy is directed to making the world a better place by helping groups and peoples who share his opinion of a better world. The desire to reach consensus often hampers progress (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type four: Idealist / Linker Link. Type 4, the Idealist, at the green level functions as a Binding Link, connecting society and individuals. He appreciates the need for communication and service to society more than serving himself, that “preserves” the illusion of abandonment. A lot of time and energy is spent on experiencing a wide range of feelings of other people, and sometimes their own. He shares what is happening in his heart and what he believes will be appreciated by society, and everything dark continues to hold inside (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type five: Sage / Professor. As type 5, the Sage, begins to become more aware of others and develops the need for communication with society, he begins to take more different ways of living in the world, developing an attitude toward people “live and let live” and functions as a Professor. At this level, type 5 can begin to understand the presence of emotions and needs in life. He begins to take into account his heart, weigh, think about it (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type six: Asking questions / Champion. As type 6, Asking Questions, begins to understand that if “doing it alone”, it will not bring security, he begins to trust others, which allows him to begin to trust himself. He finds a connection with others, acting as a Champion in the struggle for the rights of the oppressed and humiliated. Having the mentality of the supporter of equality on the green level, he still does not fully trust the authorities and himself as an authority. (Ooten, Unpublished, Ooten, 2010).
Type Seven: Adventure Finder / Conceptualizer. Type 7, Adventurer, at the green level, functions as a Conceptualizer, which understands that pain limits not only itself, but also others. He wants an equitable society where the limitations of life are absent for all. Formative concepts direct their focus of attention outward and sympathize with others, but in order to get rid of their own pain. He shows a high degree of tolerance to other ways of living until these ways impose restrictions on himself (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type eight: Defender / Patron. With the understanding that the existence of isolation does not bring happiness, type 8, the Defender, there is a sense of the need for communication with other people. But communication with others requires awareness of one’s own vulnerability. The energy aimed at hiding one’s own vulnerability makes him a Patron, leading the people behind him, protecting the weak and deprived (Ooten,
Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type nine: Moderator / Commander of the Commune. The green level for type 9, the Moderator, becomes a spiritual “detour” when time is spent on spiritual pursuits that do not bring real results. The adherent seems to be part of the commune, but does so in order to avoid conflict, and is not actually involved and not connected to anyone. It may seem that he is moving through life, but in fact he is “stupefied” by spiritual trends. He may like the search for consensus and the status quo of the green meme. Ego type 9, above all, wants coexistence with others where there are no conflicts and where this status quo is easy to maintain, but avoiding conflict never leads to true harmony (Ooten, Unpublished, Ooten, 2010).
Yellow level of consciousness
Type one: Judge / Idealist. In the most important transition to the second order of consciousness, type 1, the Judge, finds a connection with his heart and embodies empathy. Instead of projecting an ideal, the Idealist becomes an ideal. With the help of acceptance at the yellow level, the Judge is able to weaken his judgments and criticize other people. Evaluation is transformed as the line between good and evil disappears, and the Idealist can afford to be what he is, seeing that everything is good (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type two: Assistant / Facilitator. Type 2, the Assistant, in the second order understands that, since he is part of the whole of life, his needs are as important as the needs of others. Manipulations turn into ingenuity, when type 2 functions as a facilitator and is able to make so that needs and resources are combined for the benefit of everyone, including themselves. “Giving to receive” turns into a real altruism, and knowledge begins to be valued to the same extent as feelings (Ooten, Unpublished, Ooten, 2010).
Type three: Doer / Teacher. Realizing the value of all modes of existence in this world, type 3 can afford to be real. When energy is no longer spent on creating different masks for different audiences, it can be used to realize what it can offer the world, spreading hope as a Teacher. Since he no longer tries to find compensation for the deep feeling that he does not have value, the illusion of having to do something to be loved is transformed into the ability to make the best use of his time for the good of the world (Ooten, Unpublished).
Type four: Idealist / Intuitive. Realizing that everything is interdependent, type 4, the Idealist, relies on his intuition and knows that in the interconnected whole everything is enough and that everything is love. By releasing the unique image of himself, he simultaneously feels both the individuality and homogeneity of existence, which gives him access to his intuition. With access to intuition, his sense of abandonment is transformed into a feeling that he is the love and light of the heart. Knowing who he is, charges him with energy to change the world (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type five: Sage / Quantum Healer. Through the realization that energy is not created or destroyed, type 5, the Sage, understands that he no longer needs to retain it, and through non-attachment he can actively interact with people. Contact with the heart ensures that knowledge becomes an understanding, and it becomes capable, like a Quantum Healer, to heal the world (Esposito, 2008; Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type Six: Asking Questions / Full of Confidence. At the yellow level of consciousness, type 6, Asking Questions, becomes able to trust for the first time. A trusted one transforms rigidity and inconsistency into wholeness as faith develops. Understanding the need for adaptive, flexible systems allows him to act, trusting, when necessary, external authority, or to be himself an authority. “Authority can become authority, because I, too, have authority and trust myself” (Ooten, Unpublished, Ooten, 2010).
Type Seven: Adventurer / Whole. At this stage of evolution, type 7, the One, realizes that pain is an integral part of existence, and it is possible to experience pleasure only when there is pain. This understanding frees the heart and the Whole can begin to use its mental faculties to integrate complex concepts that describe aspects of existence and world problems (Ooten, Unpublished, Ooten, 2010).
Type eight: Defender / Coach. Realizing that the real power lies in softness and openness, the type 8 Defender can relax and accept his vulnerability and innocence, which gives him real strength. Using a force that comes from accepting one’s own vulnerability, the Coach can inspire others and accelerate changes in organizations and systems (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type nine: Moderator / Messenger. In an interconnected web of life, everything has value and meaning. This awareness allows type 9, the Moderator, to clearly express their priorities while interacting with others in order to change the world. By releasing the illusion of separation, he sees the importance and importance of his work in the world as he serves as a messenger for all people (Ooten, Unpublished, Ooten, 2010).
Turquoise level of consciousness
Type one: Judge / Unifying. Going to the turquoise level, type 1, the Judge, understands that everything that is happening is absolutely “as it is”, and lives from the position of unity of consciousness and tranquility. There is no bad and good, right and wrong. From a non-dualistic point of view, type 1 serves the universe as the Unifying One, and its wisdom is aimed at finding ways in life that will benefit everyone and ensure the continuation of life (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type two: Assistant / Servant of the Society. Type 2, Assistant, turning to the turquoise level, understands that we all have needs, we are all loved and all are free. There is no division between the needs of the individual and the general needs of one whole. At this level, type 2 serves with genuine humility as the Servant of the Society, working within the universe to give the whole whole. He feels completely free, as he submits to the flow and will of the universe. No one needs him, and he does not need to be anyone for anyone (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type three: Doer / Benefactor. At this level, type 3, the Doer, no longer sees itself as something separately standing, seeking approval and admiration. The benefactor knows that we are all valuable, like every note in a complex symphony of life, and that the universe acts “through us.” Each note is necessary in order to create life, and type 3 works to achieve – for everyone (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type four: Idealist / All-inclusive. Type four, the Idealist, understands that we can never be separated, because we are one with everything as an integral aspect of the revelation of reality and have never been separated from the Source. Embodying this unity, type 4 serves as the All-inclusive, knowing that we are all part of the stunning beauty of existence, and vigorously defends our right to continue existence (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010). Type 4 knows that “we are waves in the Ocean of Being.” (Esposito, 2008).
Type five: Sage / Integrating. Understanding that the part is reflected in its entirety, and the whole in part, allows type 5, the Sage, to live from the point of view of universal unlimited knowledge, realizing that even ignorance is part of the whole. Knowledge is connected with action and becomes a genuine understanding of the collective consciousness of all living beings (Ooten, Unpublished, Ooten, 2010). “The universe recognizes itself through us” (Esposito, 2008). Enlightenment comes through the experience of direct knowledge and an intuitive direct connection with consciousness. When you directly listen to a single consciousness through careful awareness and meditation, doubts and fears disappear (Ooten, Unpublished, Ooten, 2010).
Type six: Asking questions / Full of faith. Type 6 Asking Questions, at the turquoise level, understands that fear is just one aspect of multiple experiences, and it means no more than any other experience (Ooten, Unpublished). Realizing that life and death are simply energy states, he realizes that security is always present, so he trusts reality in the way it unfolds. Faith and trust to the unknown give the courage to act spontaneously and allow type 6 to work on the continuation of life (Esposito, 2008; Ooten, 2010).
Type Seven: Adventurer / Renaissance. Understanding that nothing exists outside the eternal “now”, including himself, allows type 7, the Adventurer, to conclude that the universe reveals itself, and he plays his part in this. Understanding that the individual parts are only a reflection of the whole, allows him to see new ways of living in the world for all living. Dethronement of the illusion of space and time limitation gives the Renaissance the opportunity to constantly teach people to be “here and now” (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten, 2010).
Type eight: Defender / Showing Path. All the ways of being in the world are parts of the whole. The ability to see the truth from different sides, energy, intensity and drive type 8, the Protector, are used generously to show the Way to raise the level of collective consciousness for the benefit of all. Allowing yourself to be vulnerable allows you to manifest innocence (Ooten, Unpublished; Ooten,
2010). With the emergence of innocence, fear, separation, anger and passionate desires dissolve into a “peace that exceeds understanding” (Esposito, 2008). Leading others from a position of innocence, the Path-Witnesses become teachers of wisdom and inspire others to perceive the understanding that “Everything is one” (Ooten, 2010).
Type nine: Moderator / Medium. All existence as a whole can not do without every part of it, and the parts can not exist outside the whole. At this level, type 9, the Moderator, knows that Everything is Love, and nothing can be separated from love. There is no division between the individual and the Divine, and he knows that he is worthy to be seen (Ooten, Unpublished). He remembers that “he is one with the Divine Love creating and supporting the universe” (Esposito, 2008), and from this direct knowledge he functions as the Medium, who understands everything from the point of view of embodied love (Ooten, Unpublished).
It is very important to remember that spiral dynamics are an open system, and as long as people continue to exist, new levels will always arise as a result of the emergence of new problems created by the previous level. It is also important to remember that all levels are necessary for humanity. All levels have their own advantages and all create problems; There is no worse level and no better level (Graves, 2005). We must learn to properly apply the understanding of these levels for the benefit of all people.
Our responsibility, as the vehicles of the deep potentials of consciousness, is to help ourselves and others to move to new levels only when there is a willingness to do this, and to allow humanity to be different. We must remember that neither a person alone, nor humanity as a whole should be forced to skip levels; we all have to follow the steps and stages of evolution. Inside us, there are many levels at different times and under different circumstances (Graves, 2005). Individual evolution is a lifelong process. There is no end to the path. If we want to develop, either on an individual or a global level, we should always start with ourselves and be honest about the level at which we function. Realizing this, we can challenge ourselves to expand and develop to find adaptive, creative solutions for our own lives, for our personal and working relations, for world problems.
