Urine described as “meat-wash,” tea-colored, cola-colored, brown or reddish-brown can be a sign of blood or pigments in the urine. It can happen for harmless reasons, but it can also point to kidney inflammation or other urgent conditions.
Short answer: If dark brown, red or cola-colored urine is persistent, unexplained, follows a throat/skin infection, or comes with swelling, high blood pressure, reduced urination, fever, pain or weakness, seek medical care and get urinalysis.
What changed in this update
The article was retitled from the older phrase “urine color of meat slops” to clearer medical language. The new version emphasizes that dark/cola urine can indicate hematuria and glomerular kidney disease.

Why glomerulonephritis matters
Glomerulonephritis is inflammation of the kidney filters. It can cause blood and protein to leak into urine, sometimes making urine pink, brown, tea-colored or cola-colored. Some cases follow infections such as strep throat or skin infection.
Do not wait if symptoms are serious
- Swelling of face, hands, feet or abdomen.
- Reduced urination or very dark urine.
- High blood pressure, severe headache, confusion or shortness of breath.
- Fever, flank pain or severe abdominal/back pain.
- Dark urine after intense exercise with muscle pain or weakness.
When to get medical care
Get same-day medical advice for unexplained cola-colored urine, visible blood, swelling, high blood pressure, reduced urination or symptoms after a recent infection. Emergency care is appropriate for severe pain, inability to urinate, confusion, shortness of breath or signs of severe dehydration.

Can dehydration make urine brown?
Concentrated urine can look dark yellow or amber, but true brown, red or cola-colored urine should be tested if unexplained.
What test is first?
Urinalysis is usually first. It can check blood, protein, cells, crystals and signs of infection.
Can this happen after strep throat?
Yes. Post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis can occur after throat or skin infection and may cause dark reddish-brown urine.
