Allergy, on dogs

You have probably heard that some breeds of dogs cause allergy symptoms, while others do not, or that short-haired dogs are safe, while breeds that are prone to shedding do not. But experts believe that this is not the case. In fact, dogs of the same breed can produce different levels of allergens.

The problem is not wool, usually allergy occurs to dead skin cells, as well as to saliva and urine. Therefore, the point is not how long or short the coat is, each dog carries the potential threat of an allergic reaction.

You may wonder why the dog’s coat produces such an effect. People with allergies have a very sensitive immune system. In this case, the body reacts to harmful substances, like viruses or bacteria. Sneezing and eye irritation are just side effects of the body’s attempts to destroy or get rid of the allergen.

To determine if you are allergic to dogs, your doctor may suggest that you take a skin test or a blood test called a radio allergic test. Even if you are sure that you are allergic, the analysis will certainly make sure of this. Sometimes people make mistakes, and it turns out that they are allergic to pollen or mold that dogs bring from the street.

Although an allergic test and effective, it is not always the final. This means that if you have a dog, the doctor may offer to live without him, and observe the symptoms. To give an objective assessment, it may take some time, as a rule, in order for the level of accumulation of wool to drop to an indicator that is fixed in a house where there is no dog, it will take a month.

Dog allergy treatment

Standard medicines used in the treatment of allergies can also be used in the treatment of animal allergies.

The doctor may suggest:

  • Antihistamines that block the effects of chemicals that cause symptoms. They can be sold without a prescription, like Claritin or Benadril, or with a prescription, like Alegre or Zyrtec. Some antihistamines are available as a spray, such as Astelin.
  • Decongestants, which reduce swelling and prevent mucus stagnation, among them Sudafef, which is available without a prescription, and Allgra-D, is available on prescription.
  • Other medicines that deal with allergy or asthma symptoms in various ways. Prescription steroids – Sprays of Flonaz or Nasonex – are traditionally used in the treatment of allergies.

The course of allergic injections does not solve the problem of people who are  allergic to dogs. They are not effective for everyone, and a full course of treatment can last for years. But in some cases they can really help. Talk to your doctor about their advantages and disadvantages.

For a person with allergies to dogs, life is not easy in a country where these animals are loved. The wool of these animals is everywhere, even in places where the dog’s paw has not stepped. According to the National Institutes of Health in every US home there is pet dander.
